With every new product carrying an eco-logo or green icon of one variety or another, a buyer’s challenge to see through the greenwashing gets ever harder. It can be difficult to spot the difference between enthusiastic marketing and honest transparency.

Well-known as being the pioneers of organic clothing and having achieved so many sustainable firsts within the industry, Mantis World has launched a 3 part film showcasing their African ‘field to garment’ production, to show exactly what transparency can, and should look like.

In the films, CEO and Founder Prama, walks us through the cotton fields at harvest time. We hear directly from the farmers about the differences that organic growing methods make to the soil, to their long-term yields, to their communities. And then we follow the cotton into the vertically integrated factory where it’s spun, knitted and turned into the clothes we buy from the shelves.

‘Transparency is the tool with which we counter greenwashing’ explains Prama. ‘By putting the farmers, the fields, the factory in front of the camera, we show exactly what Mantis and Babybugz mean when we talk about ethical and socially responsible purchasing as well as the benefits of organic cotton and regenerative farming.’

‘When buyers are faced with a brochure or website full of different clothing images, these can all feel like distant concepts, so we hope that by giving life to them on screen, we can reinforce the positive impact all buying decisions can have.’

Dating back three generations, Mantis World’s African roots run deep, around 30% of current production still takes place there. It’s this kind of long-term supplier relationship that is so often missing in today’s world of fast fashion – make it quicker, make it cheaper, drop a supplier and move to the next one at the drop of a hat. Passing an audit, however comprehensive, is one thing, but knowing, trusting what happens when the assessors have left, is another. It’s all about trust; building that takes time and effort on both sides. 

Transparency builds trust, accountability, and integrity. It’s defined as being open, honest, and clear in communication & operations, and as making information readily available, accessible, visible and understandable to others. The challenge all apparel brands face is achieving that when their clothing production happens so far from where it’s consumed. Digital passports that map the full supply journey and its environmental impact undoubtedly play a role in this, Mantis World has had QR codes in all their garments since 2020, but data and certifications will only ever be part of story, ‘there’s no replacement for long-standing, in-depth personal connections within the supply chain’ says Prama. 

As Mantis World prepares for its 25-year anniversary, Prama remains dedicated to raising awareness about the impact of the fashion industry. ‘It’s said that there is only 60 years of topsoil left’ she explains to camera. ‘It’s incredibly important that this is preserved and conserved. Organic farming is by its very nature regenerative, putting goodness back into the earth, increasing biodiversity and protecting ecosystems.’

When it comes to greenwashing, the onus of responsibility falls to all clothing brands to come clean, to make messaging about clear facts, data and information that informs, rather than just influences. With these videos Mantis and Babybugz have cut straight to the chase – these are the fields, these are the famers, this is the factory. Nothing to hide here. Watch the 3 part film here.

Fashion Revolution Week is the annual campaign bringing together the world’s largest fashion activism movement for action. Celebrating its 10-year anniversary, this year Fashion Revolution is inviting their community to share a decade of learnings on what it means to be a part of the revolution.

If ever there was a person who embodied what it is to be a Fashion Revolutionary it’s our very own Prama Bhardwaj, so there’s no better time to talk to her about nearly 2½ decades of work.

Prama is the founder & CEO of Mantis World. She will rightly say that everything we talk about has been achieved through teamwork & collaboration, always listing the many, many other revolutionaries & colleagues that continue to be part of the journey, but Prama is undoubtedly the force and energy behind Mantis walls, so while we’re talking Fashion Revolutionaries, we’re talking Prama.

Establishing Mantis World in 2000 Prama has been pushing for sustainable, ethical fashion before the terms were even coined. Considering herself to be both an activist, advocate and educator, working alongside others, Prama is often seen as the voice for organic cotton and sustainable textiles within the printwear industry.

There are so many milestones to consider:

• from first introducing organic cotton to Mantis World ranges in 2005, to completely eliminating all conventional cotton from its production in 2018.
• from being the first to bring out what is now a template for Digital Product Passports through a system of QR codes that show both impact metrics and traceability. A tool that is now being widely rolled out across the industry to prepare for upcoming legislation. (But back in 2020 Prama did it with Green Story because she wanted to not because Mantis World had to!)
• from speaking about manufacturing in Africa and running masterclasses on sustainable manufacture for the Ethical Fashion Forum in 2008 onwards, to contributing towards Fashion Africa (Nairobi), GOTS conference (Addis Ababa), FIT (New York), Copenhagen Business School, Textile Exchange Conferences (Mumbai, Hamburg, Vancouver, Milan), Proudly Made in Africa (House of Lords, London) and chairing the Pan Africa Sourcing Working Group for Textile Exchange…the list goes on.

But Prama’s work is about more than ‘just’ organic cotton and sustainable textiles, it’s also about ethical business.

It’s about promoting female empowerment and encouraging women entrepreneurs. In 2015 organising a screening and expert panel discussion of “The Honor Diaries” highlighting the detrimental effect on women’s rights through cultures of “honour”, in collaboration with Oxfam and LSBU. Also sponsoring a screening of the ‘True Cost’ documentary exploring the true cost of Fast Fashion, organised with Oxfam and The Asian Circle.

It’s about factory rights. Making a pledge during Covid times to not to cancel orders or ask for discounts. And about tackling the difficult subjects many are not yet ready to address – very recently speaking about overproduction and obsolescence.

Celebrating a decade of Fashion Revolution Week gives an opportunity to reflect on this work and achievements, but Prama is clear that we’re still a very long way off achieving our shared goal of a fair, safe, clean, transparent and accountable fashion industry, that protects its workers as well as the environment. There is much, much more to do and the time to do it, could not be pressing.

Fashion Revolution week strikes a particular chord each year as it commemorates the Rana Plaza disaster, the collapse of an 8-storey building housing 5 clothing factories just outside Dhaka, in which more than 1,100 people died, and many more were left with life-long debilitating injuries.

It’s a timely, sobering reminder of the vital importance of improving working conditions and traceability of the supply chain, where buyers fully take responsibility for the entirety of that chain.

To quote Fashion Revolution ‘everyone has a part to play in building a fashion industry that puts people and planet first’. Revolution is collaborative – we do it by working together, helping, supporting, sharing, encouraging…we can all make a difference and there are many different ways to do so. Importantly too ‘anyone can join the revolution. No two people look the same or lead a “perfect” lifestyle. You don’t need to be doing everything but we do need everyone to do something, however big or small.’

Fashion is a part of the problem and we can all be part of the solution.

But the final word goes to Prama, ‘if the last 25 years have taught me anything, it’s that to solve this, we need to work together. Achieving sustainable, ethical fashion is a journey. PRESS RELEASE : Mantis World Certifies as a B Corporation

Pioneers of organic clothing Mantis World is delighted to announce that it has been certified as a B Corp! Prama Bhardwaj, CEO and Founder is thrilled. ‘It’s a huge team achievement that solidifies everything we’ve been working on for over 20 years and lays the foundations for the continuation of that journey’ she said. ‘Joining the B Corp community of likeminded companies, brings exciting opportunities for sharing experience, knowledge and adding our voice to the drive to reinvent business by pursuing purpose as well as profit.’

Mantis World has needed to meet companywide meticulous social and environmental standards, and not just in terms of their supply chain or the products created – the certification process addresses the entirety of a business’ operations: – Governance, Workers, Community, Environment and Customers.

B stands for Benefit for all, and as such the process poses questions in the vein of – How is your company taking care of your workers, improving their lives and wellbeing? How is your company prioritizing and taking care of the planet? How do you make sure your company’s governance considers all stakeholders? How is your company giving back and contributing positively to the community? And how is your company having a positive impact in your customers lives?

‘The process was long, complicated, and thorough, requiring time and diligence, with all answers needing substantiation, whether through formal documentation or written statements. It was all-encompassing’ explained Melanie Metz, Mantis World’s Sustainability Executive. ‘Evidence was provided of socially and environmentally responsible practices across all areas of the business from energy supplies, waste and water use, to worker compensation, diversity and corporate transparency.’

To become certified applicants are required to reach a benchmark score of over 80. The median for businesses that apply is currently 50.9, Mantis World achieved a score of 87.3. Akhil Sivanandan, President of sustainability intelligence platform Green Story, is not surprised. “Mantis World has always been a pioneer in their approach to transparency and sustainability in fashion. They were one of the first B2B companies to launch digital product passports in 2020 clearly showcasing their impact and transparency information.’ he says ‘The B Corp certification is a very natural progression for Mantis World, given its history and dedication to responsible business practices.’

There are currently over 1,500 B Corps in the UK and 7,000 worldwide. Unlike some other more product-based accreditations, this is a certification that is recognisable across industries and achievable regardless of company size. Other certified brands include Innocent, Patagonia, The Body Shop and Lush. By certifying, B Corps step into a framework for continuous improvement and in order to maintain certification, companies must undertake the assessment and verification process every three years, ensuring lasting commitment to the community.

Chris Turner, Executive Director of B Lab UK, says “We are delighted to welcome Mantis World to the B Corp community.
